John V. Tornfelt, Ed.D.
Professor of Preaching and Ministry
B.S. Davidson College; M.Div. Denver Seminary; Ed.D. Trinity Evangelical Divinity School
While the context of ministry continues to change, the centrality of preaching in the life and mission of the church remains constant. As the Apostle Paul declared, pastors are called to preach God’s Word with clarity and in faithfulness. I count it a privilege to help men and women identify their preaching strengths as well as their growing edges. While the task is challenging, biblically-grounded preaching is essential if congregations are to be faithful and vibrant.
Before coming to Evangelical, John served in the pastorate in churches across the country. He spent two years in Nigeria as an instructor at the SIM-related ECWA (Evangelical Churches of West Africa) Theological Seminary. A frequent preacher in area churches, John also leads seminars in leadership and group dynamics. He has authored numerous articles on preaching and leadership in textbooks, academic journals, and popular publications. He is the former president of the Evangelical Homiletics Society and belongs to the Academy of Homiletics, iComm (International Community of Christian Leaders), and Association for Case Teaching.
John is married to Debbie, who is involved in property leasing and management. They live in the heart of the Amish community in Lancaster County. They have two children: Leslie is married to TJ Stewart and lives in Buffalo, NY with the cutest granddaughter in the world. Eric is married to Eden and lives in Charlotte, NC. When not traveling, he enjoys reading, playing golf, working in the yard, and exercising at the health club.
